The Catasetinae
This website features the Catasetinae, the group of orchids consisting of Catasetums, Mormodes, Clowesia, Cycnoches and their hybrids.
These orchids are easy to grow and bloom once you understand their cultural needs. They explode with new growth during the summer growing season requiring copious amounts of water and fertilizer and go dormant during the winter when they are kept dry.
They are repotted in the spring as new growth emerges but not watered until that new growth is 4 or 5 inches tall. Simple!

Growing Notes for 2026
I’ve been growing Catasetums since 1974, and this season has been unusually challenging. A severe winter spider mite outbreak persisted despite multiple Avid treatments, and the warm early spring caused many plants to sprout earlier than normal. Some new growth showed renewed mite activity, suggesting partial resistance to Avid.
I have now added Forbid to my rotation to prevent resistance going forward. Many plants show slight to moderate leaf damage, but they should grow normally. I will factor each plant’s condition into its price.
If you’re not satisfied with what you receive, please contact me promptly. As a precaution, please isolate and monitor any new arrivals.
For local customers ONLY, I will also have some cactus and succulent plants available.
